The Norwood scale, explained

The Norwood scale is a seven-stage way of describing male pattern hair loss. These four classes are where most transplant consultations begin. Your own pattern may sit between two classes.

Class 3

The first class with clear loss. The hairline recedes at the temples in an M or U shape. Many people first consider a transplant here.

Class 4

The hairline has receded further and there is often thinning at the crown, separated from the front by a band of hair.

Class 5

The front and crown areas are larger and the band between them is narrower and thinner.

Class 6

The band has largely gone and the front and crown loss has joined into one large area. Planning matters most at this stage because donor hair is finite.
